Our parents are the first gurus (teacher). They teach us to survive on this materialistic world. A spiritual Guru prepares us to escape from the bondage of rebirth. In every birth, we will have different parents but we only get a perfect Guru once in our many births. It is considered as a great gift to have such a Guru.
In every stage of self-realization, our Guru guides us accordingly. It is not important to have notes from a Guru to attain such perfection. His way of living is already a good example to follow. As a disciple, all you need is faith, respect, love and strong will power to practice and accept the truth of life taught by your guru. It is not a bed of roses. A person's ego, ignorance and misled thoughts are only wiped away by painful experiences that causes faster remedies. Sometimes it is like using a snake's poison to cure a snake bite. Perfection only comes by changes that gives great impact and not by taming your feelings that might arouse suddenly.
Once your thoughts are controlled then the Guru teaches his disciples on other methods to upgrade in spiritual life. Always remember that salvation is only attained when a person's mind, body (vital power points) and soul are prepared for it. Missing any of such perfection leads to another birth till one is totally perfect.
Another way, is to accept your guru as god. Such method transfers the divine powers of your Guru to you when he is very pleased with the dept of love and faith you have on him. Our sacred messengers preached to surrender our soul to god where it actually belongs. Similarly, all the souls belong to God and an unconscious mind enslaves the soul into many births while a conscious mind relieves it.
